Mission Improbable: "I Am Concord!" This silly video is a "tongue-in-cheek" look at the Concord F-20 "Sound Camera" reel to reel tape recorder that was popular in the 1960's. It is similar to the little tape recorders used in the TV show: "Mission Impossible", hence the name of the video. The Concord F-20 is a reel to reel tape recorder with a rim drive (a motor spins against a rubber reel table to move the tape.) The video explains and demonstrates the drawbacks of a rim drive tape recorder ...

It sure is low fi! But interesting. You can find them from time to time on E-Bay. They usually overcharge though. Oh, it does sound better than the Craig 404.

Thanks! I remember …
Thanks! I remember seeing this tape recorder on TV and was pretty sure it was “Mission Impossible” but I couldn’t be absolutely sure.
I suffered as a kid with the “rim drive” tape recorders because the capstan drive machines were too expensive at the time. At least among the portables. I guess I am making up for lost time these days, thanks to E-Bay!

Interesting-I have …
Interesting-I have one of these, got it new for my birthday in 3rd grade-1969. I was really psyched to get it, especially when I saw it was the same as the one on Mission Impossible! That was real cool for a 3rd grader! Interesting to learn that pinch rollers and capstans were not standard on everything. Thanks

I believe this …
I believe this machine came out just before 8 tracks became a common item, however, this machine was still being sold while 8 tracks were around. Not sure on this, would have to look up the dates. I don’t know that much about 8 tracks, as I went the cassette route.

So, was this device …
So, was this device before portable 8-track players?

That’s awesome! I definitely gotta see the insides!

It’s probably DC …
It’s probably DC bias as it IS a rim drive model!

I checked the …
I checked the circuit board on this little monster. The amp board is absolutely tiny and very hard to freee up to check. I see no AC Bias coil. It has no fast forward (rim drive) to test that way, and the sound quality is so “hissy” that I’m going to say: DC bias.

Thanks, I found it and left you a 5 star rating and a thank you comment. Very informative and explains why some TRs sound so bad when recording!

It’s one that’s recently added. It shows a silver cassette recorder in the picture.

Hi Cassette Master, …
Hi Cassette Master,
I don’t know the bias type. It is a cheap machine so I expect it is DC bias. How about a link to the video you mention on Bias? I checked your profile for it, but I couldn’t find it. You’ve got so many videos (which I enjoy very much), I may have missed it. I am sure others would like to learn how to determine bias on thei tape recorders too!

Is this Concord AC …
Is this Concord AC or DC bias? By the way I did make a bias video of how to find out the bias.

Hi!

Hi!
I can do a vid on the Lloyd’s. I still have to do the one on embracing your inner tape recorder. I don’t know if the Lloyd’s is AC or DC biased. It’s a standard design, similar to the Craig of the same time period. The Lloyd’s is pretty rare and hard to find information about.
The Wollensak 5750 is AC biased.

I’d like a vid on that Lloyd’s cassette recorder! I’m also wondering, is the Lloyd’s cassette recorder AC bias or DC bias?

Thanks CassetteMaster!
I have sometimes seen this model on E-Bay, complete with box. Major bidding wars when it went up there. I’ve also seen the F-85 (with capstan drive) on E-Bay. It finally sold for $135! But you never know, sometimes you find buy it now things for a reasonable price.

WOW! I LOVE that recorder!! I like the way the voice quality is! It has a certain way to it that I like (not the wow). HAHA! Your inner tape recorder! That video I look forward to! I am hoping to find this model!

Concorde F20 you’re a star and what a great voice you have. What a novel idea for a video – I’m really looking forward to the next one.

Interesting video. I just bought the F-80 today. Has some battery buildup in the Battery box so it is a tossup if it will work. Had the box and all the accessories. Cool!

Sorry former post should be F-20 same as the video.
